Origins and philosophy

Universidad Mariano Gálvez de Guatemala is an institution of higher education, private, independent, non-profit, which operates according to the laws of its institutional nature, approved on January 29, 1966, by the Supreme University Council of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala.

Its name honors the great statesman, hero and eminent jurist Doctor José Mariano Gálvez (Head of State of Guatemala, 1831-1838), founder of the Academy of Studies and reformer of Guatemalan education, who promoted important innovations in all aspects of state life. He is credited with improving public education. He fought for secular education, founded the National Library and Museum, respected the law and individual guarantees, freedom of the press and freedom of thought.

According to its Institutional principles, Mariano Galvez University essentially attends to the ethical, scientific, professional and technical education of students, through the integrated exercise of teaching, research and service to the community and regulatory, academic, administrative, disciplinary and economic independence; to the conservation and development of science and culture as universal heritage; to the promotion of research as a source of knowledge and progress and to the study of national problems with the purpose of contributing to their solution.

The ideals that inspired its founders remain in force, since the University is concerned with the integral formation of its students in an environment of freedom, mutual respect and spirit of coexistence.

Mission

To train, at levels of academic excellence and in accordance with the needs and demands of society, professionals, researchers, technicians and teachers who are scientifically competent, ethically responsible and socially open to progressive change, through the integrated development of teaching, research and community service, so that the community has the opportunity to participate in the benefits of science, technology and culture.

Likewise, that its graduates are capable of preserving, increasing and disseminating universal culture, affirming their own values and immersion in the productive process of the country, and that they contribute with a critical spirit to the solution of national problems.

Vision

To be a highly competitive institution of higher education, leader in its genre, innovative and creator of scientific and technological knowledge, in which its students reach an integral and harmonic formation and enhance their aptitudes and capacities in an environment of freedom and acceptance of the supreme values of Christianity.

And that its graduates are able to take on the challenges of the contemporary world and a changing society, committed to the economic, social, political and cultural development of the country, in permanent interaction with the national environment, with a renewed vocation of service and spirit of solidarity.
