This program is theoretical-practical and addresses knowledge of the highest demands in the medical praxis and in the creation and dissemination of knowledge. It demands commitment to attitudes and behaviors that support the interests and welfare of patients in order to solve chronic or emergency pathologies of the human body systems; taking into account the physiological, pathological, psychological and social factors that significantly influence the quality of life of the individual.

The Master's Degree and Specialty in Internal Medicine trains specialists who will provide comprehensive care to the adult patient, perform objective diagnosis and provide non-surgical medical treatment of the diseases that affect the individual and to achieve their prevention.

It employs research and evidence-based medicine, on the basis of the epidemiological profile of the country and is updated in the advances of medical care.

The program demands the student's commitment to self-training.

What will you learn during the program?

During the Internal Medicine career, the students will acquire fundamental skills to efficiently perform at any level of the National Health System. The integration of knowledge of basic sciences will be translated into the application of general and specific therapeutic procedures, contributing to the restoration of patients' health. The ability to make rational use of technological diagnostic procedures, based on clinical evidence and the doctor-patient relationship, will be fundamental. In addition, research on the most frequent pathologies in Guatemala will be fostered, contributing to the development of specific health programs. The performance of specialized diagnostic procedures under supervision and the resolution of administrative problems of the service will be emphasized competencies. Training will also include the development of a critical mentality and openness to new knowledge, as well as the ability to comprehensively address the patient. The application of ethical principles and values in professional practice will be a priority, as well as the application of a practical-theory-practice methodology, supported by systematic studies, supported by the adequate use of the registry and the commitment to self-education.
