What is Enactus?
Enactus is an international non-profit organization that seeks to develop the communities where it operates. Currently, it is in 36 countries benefiting more than one million people. Since 2004, sustainable business projects have been initiated in Guatemala in communities where business ideas are implemented, allowing the transformation of the lives of all involved in various areas: personal, professional, educational, economic, among others.
The projects are created and developed by university students with the support of professors, Enactus Guatemala organizers, entrepreneurs, among others; who implement them in selected communities and work together to generate entrepreneurial actions.
Enactus UMG Central
The Enactus team of the University Mariano Gálvez was formed in September 2010 with seven students, mostly from the evening shift, led by Ms. Silvia Meza; subsequently, more students joined the organization, making it known within the university on the Central Campus.
During 2012, the Enactus UMG team participated for the first time in a national competition as a consolidated group, presenting the project named "Jalea las Huertas," developed in San Pedro las Huertas, located at the foothills of the Agua Volcano in Antigua Guatemala, achieving third place nationwide.
In 2013, two more projects were created: "Impulsa a tu empresa" in collaboration with Technoserve, a mentoring process for SME entrepreneurs, and "Construyendo un futuro," which involved the construction of eco-friendly houses.
In mid-2015, Ms. Flor de María Mancilla was assigned as Faculty Advisor of the team; through her leadership, she facilitated a group of students to start the enterprise "Florece", a project to provide women from Chinautla with a project that would help them maintain a better quality of life; the project consisted of making a handmade shampoo for family consumption and for sale to the community, accessing additional funds and contributing to the household economy.
In 2016, through direct promotion among the participants, the number of active students in the team was increased and in this way the "Florece" enterprise was developed with greater success, which by this time, was no longer just a project to make handmade shampoo, but a comprehensive training program for local women. This was developed in several parts of the country: zones 6 and 7 of the capital city, El Fiscal village and in Villa Nueva, in partnership with municipal authorities. The program concluded in 2017, and transformed the living conditions of several women.
In the national competitions of 2019 and 2020, the "Pueblito Project" developed in San Cristobal el Alto de Antigua Guatemala, obtained the second place, which has had a positive impact, not only for Enactus' active members, but especially for the benefited community that has been able to have growth opportunities.
In the year 2021, due to the effects of the pandemic and the fact that the community of San Cristóbal el Alto needed to continue strengthening itself, it was decided to work on the "Route of Wonders" impact project, which sought to create a type of tourism based on experiences; therefore, the community's flagship products were chosen and marketed online, where, in addition to tasting them, the stories of each of the entrepreneurs were shared.
During the year 2022, one of our students had the opportunity to work on a project. The entrepreneurship "CC Datos", an innovative project that strengthened and provided technological tools in data analysis for entrepreneurs and small businesses. In that year, the Enactus UMG Central team won second place in the national competition.
In 2023, the team partnered with Banco Industrial to create the Mentes Financieras project, an educational platform that aims to address the lack of knowledge about personal finance among students and entrepreneurs. They began to lay the groundwork for project management in order to implement the project in 2024.
Currently, Enactus UMG has strengthened its presence in several areas, including the improvement of its image, the expansion in social networks, the reinforcement of internal and external work, as well as the improvement of recruitment processes and the integration of different faculties. All of this is carried out with the objective of promoting personal, academic and professional growth of each team member, while seeking to maximize collective results. Our goal is to provide university students with meaningful experiences to contribute to both their personal and professional development.
